REFLECTION
Experience
This semester, I studied Typography. As a beginner with no background, I gradually learned how to do basic layout and type design. The module was challenging but rewarding, with many surprises along the way. At first, I relied too much on personal preference and past experience. Later, I learned to accept professional advice and actively seek help from seniors. Learning to explore independently was my biggest gain. I enjoyed the type design task the most. It allowed me to dig deeper into the topic. I learned to use Adobe Illustrator and FontLab, understood type structure, and followed design rules in practice. I'm grateful to Mr. Vinod for his guidance. He pushed us to do better and inspired our creativity. This module deepened my understanding of typography and design. It taught me to balance rules and creativity, building a strong foundation for my future.
Observations
Through daily observation, I realized that typography is not just about “simply arranging text” — this was my misunderstanding before taking the module. Through learning and research, I saw that typography starts from the details. Every element matters. For example, in type design, even the length of a single stroke can affect the overall visual effect. Many times, my work didn’t look good because I overlooked the details. I was too impatient, focusing only on whether the overall result was “good enough,” instead of carefully thinking through each step. After going through this semester’s learning, I worked hard to fix this problem. The process was challenging, but it gave me a strong sense of achievement.
Findings
I found that “balance” is very important in typography and design. First, there is visual balance. I believe typography should serve the reading experience. From the strokes of a single letter to the relationship between text and images on the whole page, everything needs careful thought. Second, there is balance in design thinking. We need to follow rules, as they are often valuable advice from past experience that help create good results. But we should not be limited by them. Innovation is also necessary—it gives design life and personal style. As I mentioned before, I struggled with this balance at the beginning. I was either too free or too rigid. I realized I need to keep learning and reflecting, to keep building my own design ideas. “Finding balance” has become my main goal during this stage of learning.
