INTRODUCTION

EXERCISE

Project 1: Audio Dub & Sound Effects

 EXERCISE 1: Audio Dubbing

Task Overview:
Place audio files on timeline and sync it with video.

Audio track:

  • 3 tracks for dialogue, one character, one track.
  • 4 tracks for sound effects,
  • 3 tracks for ambience sound.
  • Edit voice from female to male, male to female, human to cute animal/adult to kid: Premiere Pro → Audio Effects → Pitch Shifter → Semi tones.

Volume: Dialogue: between -6dB & -12dB, Ambience: below -20dB, Hard sound effects: Depend.)

Process

1. Select sound effects and ambient sounds for muted videos.
We completed this step through group collaboration. We created a shared Google spreadsheet.

The part I'm responsible for is the sound effects for the office scene. I got them from the website pixabay.com

2. Record voice lines for all characters.

3.Enter Adobe Premiere Pro to edit videos.
Regarding the processing of the dialogue voice, I lowered the pitch for the character parts to make my voice sound like a male voice.

The allocation of audio tracks is as follows:
  • A1 - Female protagonist
  • A2 - Male protagonist
  • A3 - Elderly woman
  • A4 - Sound Effects
  • A5 - Ambience Sound

4. Export the video.

Reflection

In this audio dubbing task, the main challenge for me was not recording dialogue, but managing the overall sound editing. Working with a silent video meant I had to decide what kinds of sounds were needed in each scene and how they should work together to create a natural atmosphere, which was something I was not used to at first.

One problem I faced was that the sound layers felt messy when I added too many effects and background sounds. To fix this, I adjusted volume levels and used EQ to separate different sounds so they would not clash with each other. I also learned to use reverb more carefully, because too much of it made the audio feel unclear.

Another difficulty was creating a sense of space through sound. Instead of simply placing sounds on the timeline, I experimented with subtle changes in volume and reverb to make the audio feel more connected to the environment shown in the video. This process involved a lot of trial and error.

Overall, this task helped me understand that sound editing is about balance and fine-tuning, not just adding effects. It also improved my confidence in handling audio in Premiere Pro and made me more aware of how sound can quietly shape the viewer’s experience.

Exercise 2: Sound Shaping

This task required us to record and edit five different types of voice sounds, including a phone call, a voice from inside a closet, a bathroom voice, a cave/underground voice, and an alien or orc-style voice. Each recording was limited to approximately five seconds. After recording, all audio clips needed to be edited in Adobe Audition, using sound shaping techniques such as EQ and reverb to simulate different environments and sound characteristics. The goal of the task was to practice basic audio recording and sound editing skills, and to understand how different effects can change the perception of space, tone, and atmosphere in sound.

Reflection

In this exercise, I recorded five different sound types: a phone call, a voice from inside a closet, a bathroom voice, a cave-like voice, and an alien/orc voice. Because each recording was limited to about five seconds, I needed to plan the content carefully before recording. I focused on changing the recording environment and vocal tone to achieve different sound qualities.

After recording, I edited all the clips in Adobe Audition. I used the Parametric Equalizer to adjust frequency ranges, such as narrowing the sound for the phone call and reducing clarity for muffled sounds. I also applied different reverb settings to control space and delay, helping each voice match its intended environment. This exercise helped me understand how sound editing tools can significantly change how a voice is perceived.
