Project 3: Visual Effects Shot Planning

Planning is Critical

- Visual effects shots need very precise planning.
- Similar colour tones between background and subject will stress out AE’s Rotobrush, making it harder to separate the character.
- Therefore, recce (location scouting) is very important to ensure the lighting and background are suitable for VFX work.

Step 2: Shooting ( behind the scenes)

The shoot took place on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM, across several campus locations including the hostel, the Student Life Centre, corridors, and classrooms. Seok Yong played the main role on screen, while Yang Shuo handled the photography. Before filming Scene 1, our group reviewed the storyboard together and made adjustments to improve the acting, camera angles, and pacing. We also met with another group at E1.01 to exchange ideas and get feedback, which helped strengthen the storytelling and visual quality of the final footage.

Reflection

This project gave me a comprehensive understanding of the full video and sound production process, from filming to post-production and final submission. During the shooting stage, working across different campus locations required flexibility and quick decision-making. We often had to adjust camera angles, acting, and sound recording based on the space, which helped me understand how real environments affect production. Reviewing the storyboard before filming was especially useful, as it allowed us to refine scene flow and avoid unnecessary mistakes. Exchanging feedback with another group also provided fresh ideas that improved our visual storytelling.

In post-production, my main responsibility was creating and refining visual effects using Adobe After Effects. I worked on compositing, masking, and adjusting visual elements so they blended naturally with the edited footage. This process required careful attention to timing and movement, as visual effects need to support the narrative rather than distract the audience. Close coordination with the editor helped ensure consistency between VFX, sound, and pacing.

In the final stage, I focused on reviewing and organizing all submission materials. I checked the completed video multiple times to ensure there were no technical or continuity issues, and verified that all files and links were correctly uploaded and accessible. This experience strengthened my awareness of teamwork, organization, and attention to detail, and helped me feel more confident in handling both production and post-production tasks.
