Lectures
In this lecture, I mainly learned about the basic composition, the rule of thirds, the golden ratio, and the framing and cropping in composition.
1. Basic Composition
- Focal point: Good composition needs to include being able to grab the viewer's focus the first time.
- Scale and hierarchy: Usually, scale is used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements.
- Balance the elements: Make each element have a "weight" to achieve an asymmetrical balance in the picture.
- White space: Proper white space can prevent the image from being too cluttered and allow the composition to highlight the main points.
2. Rules of Third
The rule of thirds is the process of dividing an image into thirds using two horizontal lines and two vertical lines. The resulting nine-square grid can assist in the composition.
3. Golden Ratio
This is a beauty created by harmony and proportion. The golden ratio is highly artistic in design. Its specific size ratio is 1:1.618.

PROJECT 1A: PHYSICAL COLLAGE
Step 1: Cut out design elements
- Explore and search for any interesting graphics from old magazines or any printed materials.
- Cut the shapes of pictures that you are choosing.
- Repeat the steps to collect your cut out design elements.
I chose two fashion magazines as my source material. I believe the illustrations in fashion magazines are richer and more aesthetically pleasing. When I select images, I tend to choose those with attractive colors, and then I think about whether they can match each other.
Step 2: Pre-compositing
- Find an interesting background canvas
- Start compositing the cut out design elements
- Play around with the composition and layer arrangement.
I finished the first piece in class.
