Double Exposure & Image Blending Mode

  • Double exposure photography refers to the combination of multiple images into one. They are usually characterized by contours, and the goal is to present a surreal, emotional, or humorous effect.

1. Using the Tilt-Shift Effect
You can blur the photo or its details.
To add this feature, go to Filter > Blur Gallery > Tilt-Shift.

2. Create fake reflection
There are many ways you can create reflections. One of them is creating a double-exposure with the help of a separate window photo.

3. Experiment with simple portraits and details textured
Combining simple things with complex ones can bring a balanced result.

4. Convert your results to Black & White
Lack of color will enhance the emotion in your double exposure images. It gives the pictures the texture of film, allowing for a deeper emotional expression.

5. Work with silhouette
It is challenging to express photos with outlines; try to create something new.

6. Pick two random photo
Many double exposure photographs are beautiful accidents that happen by chance. But they bring good feedback and greater creative growth.

7. Make simple objects look fascinating
Combine the contours of certain objects in the photo with other scenery to make the photo look imaginative.

8. Use Shadow
Any form of contour is excellent working material in double exposure photography. Shadows are as effective as contours in this field.

  • Using mixed-mode often requires repeatedly adjusting parameters to achieve the ideal result.
A  guide of blend modes:
  1. Select the Layer 1 (Fire) to be on top of the Background (Musicians)
  2. Go to the Blending Modes option
  3. Select “Screen”
  4. As a result, all of the pixels on the fire will be selected as Screen blending mode.

PROJECT 2A: DOUBLE EXPOSURE

  • Exercise 1: Follow tutorial

We must first watch the double exposure tutorial video and download the required images. Then, we will follow the steps in the video to create a work that is the same as the demonstration.

I followed the steps in the video to complete this exercise, here are the results of the double exposure practice.

  •  Exercise 2: Your own version Double Exposure portrait

In this part, we will use our own portraits and other images to create our own double exposure effects. To complete this assignment, I found a photo I took previously in my album and searched online for a photo of a flowering tree.

First, I processed my photos by using the selection and masking feature to carefully create a clipping mask.

Then I added the flower materials and adjusted the overall color. Also add a background color.

Finally, I added some materials around to enrich the details. The double exposure photo was completed.
