The Little Prince_ Yang Shuo_ Task 3
The Little Prince_ PDF
Rationale of My Design
My design is called The Little Prince, inspired by the classic story. I looked at the composition of FLIGHTPATHS and used the empty space in the middle as the main focus, so people's eyes naturally go there. I didn't draw a clear shape, but used clouds, stardust, and other things around to make a natural frame. It surrounds and guides the eyes, making the center more noticeable. The title is placed in the center with a soft glow to create emphasis and guide the viewer's attention.
For contrast, I mainly used colors and light to make layers. The dark blue background makes the light clouds soft, and the warm-colored planets and characters make the center pop. The Little Prince and the rose are at the bottom, while the fox and rose garden are on opposite corners. This asymmetrical arrangement creates a natural balance, so the picture looks not forced but still organized.
Repetition can be seen in the cloud shapes, star trails, and circular forms, which help unify the image and create rhythm. At the same time, I also hope this surrounding element distribution can give people a feeling of being "embraced" warmly.
In order to create harmony, I maintained a soft halo at the edges and used invisible colors, making the overall atmosphere and tone appear dreamy and unified.
Overall, this design is my visual expression of The Little Prince story, also my personal understanding of it. I want to show a quiet, gentle, but a little lonely feeling, while keeping the picture dreamy and attractive.

Final Reflection
What have I learnt in this module?
In this module, I learnt the basic design principles, such as emphasis, contrast, balance, and repetition. I also learnt how to analyze a design more clearly instead of just saying whether I like it or not. These helped me understand how composition and visual decisions work together in a design.
What did I enjoy the most?
I enjoyed the process of finding and analyzing reference works the most. It allowed me to discover many talented artists, and looking at their work felt both enjoyable and inspiring. Although sometimes I felt a bit anxious seeing people my age or even younger doing very well, I think it also pushed me to improve.

What did I not enjoy the most?
I struggled the most during the final design stage when developing my sketch. I had ideas in my mind that I thought were good, but my drawing skills were not strong enough to fully realize them. This made the process confusing and frustrating, and I felt like I was working without a clear direction.

What have I learnt about myself?
I realized that I have a strong imagination and can easily get ideas from what I see and think. However, I also lack a solid foundation in art skills and tend to work inefficiently when handling details. I often repeat unnecessary steps, which slows down my process. This is something I need to improve through more structured learning.

What has changed and what has not changed?
What has changed is that I now have a clearer understanding of design principles. I realized that strong designs are usually supported by these principles, so I started to think more consciously when making design decisions. What has not changed much is my drawing skill, which still needs a lot of improvement. I think I should spend more time practicing and strengthening my technical ability.

What are my aspirations?
Besides improving my basic drawing skills, I want to create works that can tell a story. In the future, I hope my designs can not only look visually appealing but also carry emotions and create a stronger connection with the audience.
